Telephone services are changing rapidly. At Gallaudet, some University employees have given up their desk telephone service,
converting to cellular telephones and/or telephone/pagers. Others are using their desk telephone lines for Sorenson videophones.
ITS welcomes these changes and will continue to provide the infrastructure necessary for robust telephone services.
ITS is providing the following information about services and charges to allow campus telephone service clients to make informed decisions
about telephone services.
- Desk telephone only. Desk telephone service (202-651-xxxx, 202-448-xxxx, or 202-250-xxxx) costs departments $33 per month per phone. Local, long distance, and international calls are extra.
- Desk telephone and Sorenson videophone. The department is charged only for the desk telephone service at $33 per month plus local, long distance, and international calls. However, the Sorenson videophone number must be the same as the desk telephone number unless there is a conflict between the current phone number and an existing Sorenson videophone number. (This can happen because Sorenson currently allows individuals to choose any number they wish for their videophone number if that number has not been chosen by someone else previously.) If there is a conflict, then a different number will be assigned for the Sorenson videophone at no charge.
- Sorenson videophone only. Two options are available:
- A Sorenson videophone using a Gallaudet number (202-651-xxxx, 202-448-xxxx, or 202-250-xxxx) will cost $10 per month, because Gallaudet must pay to reserve numbers. Usually, a person’s current desk phone number can be assigned to the Sorenson videophone, but not always. Sorenson videophones using Gallaudet numbers can be listed in the Gallaudet Employee Telephone Directory, if the user requests this service. (Note that employees cannot create their own Sorenson videophone numbers using the Gallaudet prefix, 202-651-, 202-448-, or 202-250-, to avoid conflict with existing number assignments.)
- A Sorenson videophone using a non-Gallaudet number, such as a person’s home phone, will not be charged. Non-Gallaudet numbers will not be listed in the Gallaudet Employee Telephone Directory.
