ITS endeavors to protect the security of data contained in all devices connected to the University's network. Nevertheless, users of computing systems at Gallaudet should be aware that:

  • Security and privacy of data can never be guaranteed on a network-connected device.
  • Security may also be compromised through physical access to a device.
  • Security is not absolute with any computer operating system, whether Microsoft, Linux, Unix, Mac, or any other.
  • Under certain conditions, ITS personnel may scan or search computing devices on campus either through their network connection or by means of physical access.
  • Legally protected data, such as student grades, should be stored on a physically secure external drive to protect it from being seen by unauthorized persons.

If you have data that is so sensitive that it should never be seen by anyone's eyes but your own, or is so valuable that loss of it would do you serious harm, do not leave it on a computer. The best programs, policies, and technologies cannot guarantee computer security for anyone.
