How do I use the wireless network?
  1. A laptop computer with a Type II PCMCIA slot (or a laptop with built-in wireless). "Bluetooth" wireless is not intended for connection to the campus wireless network. You must have "802.11" or "Wi-Fi" wireless.
  2. At least an 802.11b (Wi-Fi) wireless PCMCIA card. With current versions of card firmware and wireless software for your computer installed. See your computer and/or wireless card manufacturer's website for info and updates.
  3. A campus active directory username and password. Log in using your Bison/PeopleSoft account and password.
  4. Wireless network name (SSID) set to "Gallaudet".

Wireless network cards are designated as 11Mbps (Mega bits per second), although due to network overhead and shared use they will never reach that speed. You will typically see around 5Mbps. For most applications this will be adequate.

Can I use wireless from building to building on campus?
Yes, authenticated wireless users will need to go to standby on their laptop then re-establish the connection in the new building to obtain a new IP address for the building. Usually by closing laptop lid, and reestablishing connection by opening lid to bring computer out of sleep/suspend will enable your laptop to obtain a new IP address.
